Another QB with stitches
When I first heard about the freak accident in which Armanti Edwards cut his foot while mowing a lawn, it brought to mind a similarly strange slip up involving another Appalachian State quarterback.
Scott Satterfield lost his footing while coming down the bank from a practice field above Kidd Brewer Stadium in August of 1995. He braced his fall with his right hand, and sliced it on the sharp edge of a rock. The cut required 20 stitches. Journal columnist Lenox Rawlings described the repair work as resembling seams on a baseball.
“It was my senior year, 10 days before we played Wake Forest,” Satterfield said a few weeks ago. “I had 20 stitches in my throwing hand. It ended up being a pretty good year.”
Indeed. Satterfield wound up playing in the season-opening game against Wake Forest, and Appalachian won 24-22. The Mountaineers went on to a perfect 11-0 regular season.
Satterfield is now quarterbacks coach and passing-game coordinator for the Toledo Rockets, who face a rugged early-season schedule. The Rockets lost 52-31 in their opener at Purdue Saturday. They’ll play Colorado Friday in a nationally-televised game on ESPN, and then at Ohio State Sept. 19.
