Edwards Winging It
Coach Jerry Moore handed Armanti Edwards a magazine article on Drew Brees as Edwards got off the team bus Friday night, before the Furman game.
“There’s only about that much difference in their height,” Moore said, using his thumb and index finger to indicate maybe a half-inch. “That’s the reason I gave it him.”
Whether Edwards, all 5-11, 185 pounds of him, will get a chance to play quarterback in the NFL isn’t certain. Whether Edwards will plug into some type of Wildcat formation isn’t certain. But two things are for sure, Edwards has developed into a prime passing quarterback and his statistics are incredible.
Edwards, who has completed 72 percent of his passes this season and thrown just one interception in 215 attempts, is the first player in NCAA Division I history to pass for 9,000 yards and rush for 4,000.
He reached the landmark against Furman, passing for 355 yards and rushing for 106.
Coach Bobby Lamb of the Paladins said that he’s impressed at how good of a passer Edwards has become.
“We had kids covered as good as you could cover them on Saturday in about three or four cases and he put the ball on the money,” Lamb said. “Appalachian, I think when they started out with him, they were a spread option team and I’m not sure right now if they’re that. They’re more of a spread and throw it down the field.”
