Field Goals Long and Numerous

Jason Vitaris, Appalachian State’s kicker, has made six field goals from 40 yards or longer through seven games this season.

That’s the most in a season from that distance since All-American Bjorn Nittmo kicked eight field goals from beyond 40 yards in 1987.

Vitaris, a junior, is 6 of 7 on attempts 40 yards or longer this season, and 8 of 9 during his career from that range. His longest is a 49-yarder against Wofford on Oct. 17.

He had just one attempt last Saturday, making a 43-yarder against Georgia Southern.

Armanti Edwards, the Mountaineers’ quarterback, was glad to see more touchdowns scored in a 56-12 romp over the Eagles.

“We had been driving the ball all season but settling for field goals,” Edwards said. “This time we got touchdowns.”

Vitaris and the Mountaineers have 12 field goals overall this season. That’s more than in five of the last six seasons. The Mountaineers totaled 17 field goals, in 15 games, in 2007.

Nittmo holds the school record for field goals in a season with 18 in 1988.
