Trey Elder
Trey Elder, part of Appalachian State’s three-national title teams as a quarterback who started a few games and was a reliable backup to both Richie Williams and Armanti Edwards, knows about high-powered offenses.
He was at Saturday’s game at Furman, in which the Mountaineers put up a lot of points again in a 52-27 win.
“I got to watch the Georgia Southern game on TV last week, and then got to come out and see this game,” Elder said. “It’s looking like the old App football.”
Elder, who spent last season as a student assistant with the Mountaineers, is still part of a big offense at a big-time program. He is coaching offensive line, quarterbacks and running backs on the ninth-grade team and helping with quarterbacks on the varsity at Brynes High School in Duncan, S.C., where he played.
The Byrnes Rebels, winners of six Class 4-A titles over the last seven years, are No. 3 in USA Today’s national prep football rankings. The Rebels won 75-27 over Mauldin on Friday night, and scored 85 points in a game earlier this season.
“I’m really enjoying it,” Elder said. “If I stay in high-school ball I’d like to be a varsity coach but the situation I’m in now is great. I’m getting to learn a lot from Coach (Bobby) Bentley. I love teaching and coaching.”
