Where’s the Fried Chicken?

I don’t eat a lot of fried chicken, but when I get a craving, the urge comes on strong.

My mind — and stomach — had some help in bringing on the latest craving. I was reading about Price’s Chicken Coop in the July Gourmet Road Food column by Jane and Michael Stern.

I was almost tempted to get in the car and drive to Price’s in Charlotte to satisfy my craving, but then I stopped myself by thinking of how much that chicken would cost after I paid for the gas.

With my fried-chicken craving momentarily thwarted, I started thinking about where I could go in Winston-Salem or vicinity to get fried chicken.

I’m not thinking of the usual chains, but independent restaurants that know how to treat chicken right.

I’m having a hard time thinking of a place.

Surely, this city has to have some great fried chicken. We are living in the South, after all. But darned if I can think of the place.

If anybody else knows of some great fried chicken being served around here, please tell me.

In the meantime, I’ll be in the kitchen, butchering my own bird and dunking it in buttermilk.

My favorite fried chicken out and about in Winston-Salem is at Meta’s, Michael. Mountain Fried Chicken has a good rep, but I don’t feel like they live up to it. They didn’t make my Cheap Eats list back in the spring after I visited there.

Believe it or not, K & W Cafeteria has great fried chicken.

Mountain Fried is wonderful, I think.  Not gourmet but not Bojangles either.  Locally owned and personally loved!
