Eating and the Recession
![]()
A recent survey from Workplace Media showed that the recession is causing changes in eating habits, even if many of us are changing them begrudgingly.
The survey of 760 workers in June found that 76 percent are making some kind of cuts to deal with the recession.
Work lunches definitely are a target for the budget-conscious: 40 percent said that they eat out less at work, and thus are bagging it more often.
Coffee, too, has taken a big hit. Spending two bucks or more for a Starbucks or other coffee is an obvious budget killer.
So 35 percent have stopped buy on-the-go coffee, and 40 percent are spending “less than top dollar.” I presume that means more people are skipping Starbucks and going for something cheaper.
Other results from the survey:
When asked how the recession had affected their dinner consumption:
—48 percent are buying dinner out less often.
—42 percent are making dinner at home more often.
—2 percent said they just decided to skip dinner altogether! OR, “said they rarely eat dinner anymore.”
—57 percent said they use more coupons.
