Frank Bruni on Nightline
For those of you who salivate over the New York Times restaurant reviews each Wednesday, Frank Bruni, the paper’s resident critic, will be on ABC’s Nightline Wednesday at 11:35p.m.
The New York Times restaurant critic’s position is probably one of the most influential in a city that is the center of the American food universe, and indeed, the world. But Bruni’s back story brings that job down to earth - in a new biography, he talks about how much of his life he has struggled with his weight, even to the point that he was bulimic in college (he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, by the way). His relationship with food has been complicated, sometimes perverse, and often self-destructive - yet he eats and writes for a living. His book is Born Round: the Secret History of a Fulltime Eater, and it’s supposed to be released this week.
Bruni’s not unveiling himself without reason - he will be stepping down from his gig at the end of the month. Though I’m sure plenty of people already knew what he looked like, since he covered politics in Washington and was the Rome bureau chief from 2002 to 2004. And he’s had a good run - he’s been the critic since March 2004, often going to extreme lengths to get inside the restaurant business, like the time he took a job as a waiter (outside of New York).
