Hot Diggity Dog

July 23 is National Hot Dog Day. What are you doing to celebrate?
I’m thinking of heading down to PB’s Takeout or Kermit’s. Or if I’m in the mood for something different, I might go for the pretzel-bun kosher beef dogs at Skippy’s downtown.
If I decide to make my own, I might go for one of those crazy dogs they eat in Chicago.
Often called “dragged through the garden,” these are big beef franks on poppy-seed buns with mustard, sliced tomatoes, dill-pickle spears, sweet-pickle relish, celery salt, hot peppers and sometimes onions.
It’s a big, messy orgy on a dog, but it sure tastes good.
Here’s some trivia from the U.S. Hot Dog and Sausage Council:
—Americans spent more than $3.4 billion on hot dogs and sausages in U.S. supermarkets last year.
—From Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically eat 7 billion hot dogs or 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.
—And on a sad note—can this be right?—- South Carolina eats more hot dogs than North Carolina.
