How Much is Thanksgiving Costing You?

I, for one, spend a lot on groceries around the holidays. I suspect that anyone cooking for company does.

I try not to price out the cost of the Thanksgiving feast, because I’d rather focus on the fun instead of the economics of it.

But the recession at least has me wondering about how to keep the cost to a minimum.

Well, just about when I started wondering, along comes a press release from the cost-conscious folks at Walmart. The store says it can provide Thanksgiving dinnner for 8 for $20. That’s pretty darn cheap.

For that amount, you get a $12-pound Grade A turkey (for 40 cents a pound), plus:

Three 11- to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables

·      Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce

·      Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing

·      One 5-pound bag of red potatoes

·      One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls

·      One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake.

Realisticallly, you might have to add a bit more to cover things like butter, flour and milk, assuming that most people would want mashed potatoes and gravy.

And I probably would never do this, because I prefer to make foods from scratch. The only things from scratch in this feast are potatoes and turkey.

But it’s nice to know that you can throw a reasonable holiday meal on the cheap if you know how to shop.
