Simply Ming After All These Years

While a lot of splashy Food Network stars have come and gone, Ming Tsai has held on for six years with a quiet, unassuming demeanor and a no-frills cooking show on PBS.
His Season Seven premiere will be Saturday, Oct. 10.
The premiere will feature Tsai’s own mother in a demonstration of ideas for wonton wrappers.
The season will feature plenty of guest chefs. More interesting perhaps is that Tsai also has invited various officials in nonprofits who come on the show to cook, but also get a chance to tell a large TV audience about their causes.
They will include people from SquashBusters, which challenges and nurtures urban youth to recognize and fulfill their potential through the game of squash and fitness, as well as academics and community service; the Yale Sustainable Food Project, an ambitious program aiming to change the way our country engages with food and agriculture; and Slow Foods USA, an organization that promotes respect for food and agriculture.
If you’ve ever seen Tsai, he is one laid-back, easy-going chef. It’s nice to see a chef who is so comfortable in his own skin—and one who uses his fame to help others.
