Tomatos and Twitter

I wanted to show off this picture of my latest harvest of currant tomatoes.

I’ve got to move the tomatoes out of the garden, fast, so I can get my fall garden growing, but it’s hard when some of my tomato plants are still cranking out fruit.

My mom bought a few currant tomato transplants from the Carrboro Farmers’ Market this spring, and didn’t have room for all of them. Before now, the only place I’d seen currant tomatoes was on a tomato plate at a restaurant last summer, or maybe the summer before last. They are sweet, juicy and stunning. I’ve been eating them in salads, and with larger sliced tomatoes, basil and vinaigrette, sprinkled over the plate like a handful of jewels. They come in yellow and red, but my yellow plant is outpacing the red one.

In the photo, I added some of my red cherry tomatoes, which are larger, for scale. The currants about half the cherries’ size - tiny, tart and yeah, really cute!

Hope we see similar plants around Winston-Salem next spring!

And in other news, I’m now Twittering with some of the other features staff. Click here.

Gosh those are cute…when in season I toss quartered grape tomatoes into my corn muffin batter - but I bet the currant toms would be even more wonderful!
