Someone mentioned Fisher at point.  Are you kidding me?  The problem at Wake is a gross lack of talent and coaching.  We have two major Div. 1 players on the team (McKie and Harris, and Harris should be a complimentary player).  When we had Paul, Downey and Gray, Harris would not have gotten on the floor.  Wake fans need to understand how far we are from even competing much less winning.  We need talent and a coach who can get it.

It’s just terrible to watch. Was it a hundred years ago that Chris Paul, Justin Gray, the Big E, Trent Strickland and Jamal Levy prowled the Joel to sell out crowds, with plenty of students to be sure, or does it just seem so? Time for a change folks, or else we can start playing in the on campus gym.

Paul on 02/02/2012 (6:18 pm)

I just hope that this team doesn’t fall apart any more than it has already.  It’s becoming a pity that we have to watch this disaster week in and week out.  Keep your chins up guys, it can’t get any worse.

I used to be excited to come to every Wake Forest home game and happy to make the 150 mile roundtrip.  Last season and this season have taken the joy out of watching Wake basketball. As a fan for nearly 50 years and a ‘73 grad, I’ve never been sadder about our basketball program.  The Joel has been an exciting place with a homecourt advantage. That is not currently the case.  Surely the folks in charge must know a lot of damage is being done that may have long term repercussions.  I want to be hopeful and excited again.  It is becoming increasingly difficult to believe the current coach can get the program back to a place of respectability.  Go Deacs!

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - The Denver Nuggets have fired coach Jeff Bzdelik after two-plus seasons at the helm. Denver has struggled to a 13-15 start and is in the midst of a six-game slide.

I know…I am dreaming…thanks Wellman.

Chase Fischer is NOT a PG. He’s not even a combo G. He’s a pure shooter. He is however part of the solution

We need CJ back at the point. He drives, he gets the ball up on the rim and he gets to the line, all things good PGs do. CJ is the only player on the court capable of making his own shot and really the only one I’d trust to actually make a play happen.

The problem is when CJ gets to the basket he’s got no outlet because Chennault and McKie can’t shoot. How many times did we run the high screen where CJ got to the lane then had to kick out to the nonshooter? McKie’s being left on the baseline, Meschirakov is being left on the baseline, Chennault is being left on the baseline. Maybe we should spot Fischer down on the baseline and see if they’ll let him shoot.

Let Walker set the high screen. Let CJ penetrate. Let McKie be the post option and let Fischer be the shooter. If Fischer can’t shoot, let Fields try.

Our offense stinks, I’m getting kind of desperate.

UNC played the worst game they had in years and still won by 15 points. Just how much further down does the Wake program have to go? To be honest last night we probably had about 2,000 to 3,000 fans that were Wake Fans the rest were UNC fans. The AD continues to support this coach no matter what. I am trying to think of something positive that anyone has said about this coach and I cannot. To me it feels like the Wake coach is just drawing a paycheck untill he is let go. I guess he figures that he will not coach again after this and a good paycheck from Wake is worth something, at least to him. A statement from the AD that at least states to the Wake Fans that he (Ron Wellman) is aware of the fact that Wake is going through historically bad times right now, but that he wanted all of the Wake Fans to know that he and the Wake Administration is comitted to a quality basketball team at Wake would certainly mean a little something. I don’t expect him to do that though. Instead Ron Wellman’s continued silence means to me that he is telling the Wake fans to go pound sand.

The only people who would enjoy watching this Wake team play UNC would also enjoy watching a lion hunt the injured baby gazzle.  Everyone already knows the outcome of that scenario.  I’m surprised any non-UNC fan would even think of spending their money to watch Wake-UNC play this year.  Wake’s team is filled with skinny post players, poor shooting perimeter plays, and point guards that have a limited ability to handle the ball.  Why spend your entertainment dollars to watch this team play, fan or no-fan of Wake?

MikeB on 02/01/2012 (12:16 pm)

I thought that Chase made some really nice passes in the game against Carolina. He played some with Harris in the backcourt and Tony on the bench. I know that Chase Fisher does not have what you typically want in a point guard. I think he may be able to be a “John Scheyer” type point guard. At this point I think you have to try it. We do not attempt to post up. I do not think we can have a point guard as out of control and as lacking of a shot as Chenault. We will get little offense from the center position. We cannot expect to get enough scoring just from Harris(who is playing very smart and well), Mckie(who is being asked to do more than he is capable), and Nikita. We have to have another scorer on the floor. It could well be that Fisher cannot handle playing point, but I would like to try it. Chenault is just not capable of playing that position for 30 plus minutes a game at this point in his career.

You are spot on about it being a downer. Before the game, I was able to watch a re-run of the game several years ago in which Chris Paul led the Deacs to an easy victory over the Heels in a packed Joel that was absolutely electric (Dick Vitale’s words—-not mine). Talk about contrast—-night and day!

steveh on 02/01/2012 (11:37 am)

Deacs Cover!!! Deacs Cover!!! We beat the spread… the bookies underestimated us!!!

Some days you just have to pick out the positives instead of reflecting on the negatives that are staring you in hte face…

Lee Jackson on 02/01/2012 (11:10 am)

Dan:

I have to say I totally agree with your evaluation of the game…..I hate to admit it but after Carolina’s 17-5 run at the end of the first half I turned to the History Channel. I figured there was no way Carolina could play any worse and it didn’t look like we had a pulse at all other than a short (like 30 second) spurt
right before they went on their run. Just really bad basketball and very hard to watch…I made the mistake of watching UVA-Clemson earlier which was hard fought, competitive, crisp…all the things our game wasn’t.

A telling comment on the Deacs by Bilas after the Heels scored probably 6 out of their first 8 buckets on offensive rebounds…“when the shot goes up all the Wake Forest players are looking at the ball, not turning around and finding someone to block out, it’s pretty simple stuff”....and so it goes.

Deacon23 on 02/01/2012 (11:00 am)

Hi Country!
Pity that you have to sit ringside to see this continue…least you are getting compensated for your time.

Been a Wake follower since ‘61, and for me apathy has set in. I am not going to criticize the Wake Management as others are doing a yeoman’s job in that department and I cannot add anything new anyway! I did not even watch the game last PM…

However, I will say make one statement…I sure miss Skip right now!!!

Tom Willis on 02/01/2012 (10:59 am)

I watched the game last night and have was left with the same opinions as previously stated. Wakes performance was just poor period. Changes need to be made all around but nothing will happen this year. Wake needs a complete overhaul both with more talented players and major coaching changes. I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s sad to see what happened and only intervention by highest authority at Wake will make this happen.

Jack on 02/01/2012 (10:50 am)

The game was awful.  The atmoshpere was terrible.  I sit in a section that is totally season ticket holders and I sat in a sea of blue.  My ticket stubs said I had spent $150 for my wife and I to have this evening of pleasure, not including my parking pass.  I keep looking for positives as I want our coach to succeed since I want my team to succeed….I’m just running out of anything positive to think about this situation.  I was honestly embarrassed when the small amount of students began shouting Wake Forest and were drowned out by the fans in blue yelling tar heel.
Mr. Wellman, please give an honest assessment of the program at the end of the year and take the appropriate action, whatever that may be.

Jim on 02/01/2012 (10:15 am)

Plain and simple we looked scared last night. There was no confidence on the court at all. We also looked robotic. There was no instinctual basketball being played.

Many times our inside players got blocked because they didn’t take the ball up strong. Many times our shooters lost shot opportunities and allowed defenders to recover because of shot fakes. We seemed to be making the game harder.

The one player who didn’t seem intimidated and actually seemed up to the task was Daniel Green. Maybe he just didn’t know he was supposed to be afraid???

JoeyD on 02/01/2012 (10:12 am)

same issues remain..no fundamentals being taught/learned—getting position on rebounds and blocking out..the first 4 or 5 possessions resulted in multiple offensive rebounds..numerous turnovers, poor shot selection, lethargic attempts to get loose balls. no real offensive scheme. maybe we could win the local YMCA Tournament—with a different coach??

beach deac on 02/01/2012 (8:29 am)

I have tried and tried and tried to support the “new direction” but this is as UGLY as i have seen a basketball team play ever. Something has got to change and it starts with the AD, he made his bed now its time to lay in it. He has done alot of good for Wake but this is an embarrassment….

jeff on 02/01/2012 (8:17 am)

Lenox Rawlings article tells the tale of the tape.  Tickets were still 50 to 75 dollars? For what? I check everyday on the WFU Sports web-site for the 2012 ticket pricing on football. For What? Three straight losing seasons. I rather watch re-runs of the 1983 Carolina 500 knowing Mr. The King wins the race. By the way Dan , dude on Pawn Stars last night brought some neat Wright Brothers stuff in and they talked Kitty Hawk, NC up.
