Let’s see…espn picks us 5th in our division, ACC picks us 5th, SI picks us last! Thankfully the players and not these writers will decide where we finish. With all the talent you have mentioned, and with the coaching of Grobe, I think we can finish a respectable 7 win team, but the key will be no qb controversy…someone has to step up!

Ken,
We talked with Coach Grobe about just that Saturday. His comments:
“We’ve got to play all three running backs. We’re going to end up doing that. The thing that we haven’t done – I don’t know how we’ll get to it because we’re not just a hand-the-ball-to-the-tailback team right now – I’d like to see Brandon and both Joshes get more carries. But the nature of the offense is that we’re going to be a little more selective about what play we’re running based on formation and what we’re seeing on defense and things like that. So it’s going to vary.
“One day you might get 30 carries and the next day you might get two. That’s one thing I would have liked to have seen today. I would have liked to have seen our running backs carry the ball a little bit more, but I think they’re going to get their wish here before long.”

Dan,
Love what I hear but I’m a little concerned about the 3 RBs all getting satisfactory number of snaps. I’ve seen happen all too often….one gets dissatisfied and basically quits on the team. How do Grobe and Lobo plan to keep them all happy?

Matt,
I believe the answer to your question about the defense lies not in physical size and ability but mental grasp of assignments. So many defensive players who have a chance to make a splash this season are still in their first or second year in the program and are, thus, more apt at this time to be out of place or miss an assignment. Grobe said it’s up to him and his assistants to coach them up. I talked with Don Steelman, the trainer, and he didn’t seem to think that Bohanon will be out for long. But he’s always cautious in what he says, as he should be.

Hey Disco - great information, as always. Thanks for the article here and in the Journal. My question for you is: if the defense is so strong, fast, and athletic, how could such an inexperienced quarterback crew carve them up so much during the scrimage? While I liked what I heard about the success of the quarterbacks and running backs, I wondered why the D was so porous. Do you have any thoughts? Also, do you have any word on how Tommy Bohanon is doing after popping his shoulder out of joint?

Good stuff Dan, keep it up. Too many good RBs and WRs is a good problem to have. I hope they ARE the surprise team of the ACC this season!

Country,
Thanks for the great updates and information. Let’s hope this team is similar to the ‘05 squad…full of surprises!
