Jim and DC,
I haven’t talked with Grobe about this, so I may be way out to lunch. But my best guess is that the factors that would come into play are a) how early in the season does the injury occur, and b)how bad is the injury.
If Stachitas were to get hurt in the first two or three weeks badly enough that it appeared he might miss consideration action, then I can see Grobe going with Price—assuming, of course, he’s confident that Price has learned the system. I’m a bit surprised that Price is still second-team, given he’s a first-year freshman and given how impressive Cross was in the second scrimmage. But I don’t think Grobe would consider Price second-team this late in preseason if he thought there was no way he plays this season.

The espn blog also announced today that Ted would start and Price would be #2. Of course, you scooped them first and HD probably read your blog. My real question is would Grobe really burn that redshirt year on Price? I can’t see him playing unless a bowl bid is on the line or something like that. And, what happens to Cross? Could this lead to discontentment? I imagine Sky will move back to WR, but that position is very deep. I’m glad I’m just an armchair qb and these decisions are in the capable hands of Grobe & staff.

Dan,
Thanks as always for the updates. In the event that Ted Stachitas holds onto the number one spot at QB, what is your hunch about Tanner Price’s status for the year? Coach Grobe has said a number of occasions that he doesn’t want to burn a redshirt year unless the freshman is going to get a lot of playing time. However, I think that a true freshman QB can learn quite a bit as a backup.
Plus, with Stachitas’ injury history, I’m sure that Coach Grobe wants to be comfortable with his second-team QB. Is it clear that he is sufficiently happy with Cross and/or Jones in order to redshirt Tanner Price? Thanks again.
