Thanks I’ll have to put those on my reading list.

Hey Jim Pomeranz, it has been a long time, too long. Hope you’re flourishing. Thanks for the link to your blog. I’ll check it out.

My pleasure Jonathan, glad you’re reading. The best book I’ve ever known on ACC History was Ron Morris’ book ACC Basketball: An Illustrated History. The drawback is that it was written in 1988, so it doesn’t encompass the last 25 years. That’s really a shame. I’ve not read it but I’ve heard that the new book by Samuel Walker is rich in detail, if somewhat scholarly. Walker is a professor at Maryland who, interestingly enough, is the brother of former Virgina star Wally Walker. People who have read it say it’s dry, but informative.

Thanks for the shout out in your blog. Talking about ACC tradition has got me interested in reading more about the formation of the conference in the first place. I’ve read your book “Tales from the Wake Forest Hardwood” and enjoyed it. Do you have a good recommendation on a book to read about the backroom dealing going into forming the ACC and how Wake Forest got included?

Hey, Country! Longtime no see. War put me onto your blog after he read my blog today. My idea and Feathers are about the same: Two divisions, etc. I actually wrote that many posts ago; not sure when he did. Didn’t beg, steal or borrow from him. If you have a chance, and a long time to read, look at http://jimpomeranz.blogspot.com. All teh best!

Dan,
Do you think Wake would be allowed in the group of 5 that get to play Duke and Carolina twice each year? How could the league justify it?

If you are going to make the idea float (and I wish you could) you are going to have to get ESPN at the table with a boat load of bucks. Money is the only reason Swafford, the ADs and Presidents do anything. Rivalries are being killed off in every sport and in every region of the country not just the ACC.
If the ACC and the Big Four were still the “king of the hill” (which they aren’t) you could probably get ESPN to pony up a ton for the old Dixie Classic format (although you’d have to change the name to something more PC and suitably glitzy).....a holiday tournament every year featuring the Big Four against the best 4 teams in the country. Ain’t gona happen. Bottom line is that you better get used to plain vanilla media and money driven “entertainment”....not basketball rivalries.

Perhaps the Big 4 was disassembled on purpose. Other ACC teams have many unpleasant memories of past visits to Tobacco Road. Fans located in NC, including me, have always seen the ACC as OUR personal playground. I just don’t understand why those less important teams in Florida, Georgia, Boston, Maryland, NY, SC, Va, PA, just don’t get it. Something has got to done about their attitude don’t you think?

I guess I am just happy that Wake is still considered part of anything that has the word BIG attached. And by the way, Great Idea!

Dan,
I think you stole a great idea! If your solution wouldn’t work, I would even go for this: 2, 7-team divisions; you play every time in your division twice; then you play 6 of the other 7 teams once (with one team from the other division rotating off your schedule every year). Playing every team in your division twice would preserve more rivalries and it would allow for new rivalries to be created (which in my opinion won’t happen if you are only playing teams once a year and every other year at home).

Dan….I agree 100%. Expansion is fine, well and good but it sure did screw up the Big Four….I understand it but I don’t have to like it!!
