An Hour With Bzdelik: Take 5

MTOW: One thing that people keeping coming back to me with is, you use the word culture, and it’s a vague term to a lot of people. Can you define it? When you say you’re going to build a new culture at Wake Forest, can you give somebody a little bit more tangible definition?

JB: I said that (earlier). In order to reach a team’s fullest potential, you have to be disciplined in all areas of your life. That means going to class. That means being on time when time is involved. That means being respectful. That means establishing a work ethic. That means getting out of yourself and into the team, so you have a team concept. Those things need to be re-established here.

The more I think about this “culture” statement the more I agree with Embers.  Its completely insulting to former Coaches Odom, Prosser, and Gaudio as well as to former players like Tim Duncan, Childress, Rodney, or even Mugsy.  I understand that Bz and our bumbling AD are probably just trying to take potshots at Dino, but when you make statements like this you are insulting the program as a whole and the rich history that it has or had.  Frankly if that is how this “coach” acts. I want nothing to do with HIS “culture.

Jim, Rumors are one thing, but repeated slams by people in authority is quite different.  This ridiculous “culture” crap and the incumbent innuendo, has people not only slamming former coaches but whole teams of former players.  And with no specific allegations, NONE of these individuals get the opportunity to defend themselves.

If we had hired a qualified basketball coach, we would not have to resort to such despicable tactics to try to justify the hire.

I’m in “culture” shock!

I’m not pleased with Bz either.  However, anyone who has been around Wake teachers and staff (as I have) is bound to have heard some of the rumors going on about some of the things he alludes to during the last couple of years.  They are rumors and I have never heard anyone substantiate them, but sometimes the old expression “if there’s smoke, there’s fire.”  The problem, as several people have mentioned, is that nobody has stepped up and gave definitive answers in regard to this.  Unless this happens, there will always be rumors.

I really resent Coach Bzdelik’s response to the question on culture, on behalf of prior coaches Odom, Prosser, and Gaudio. I feel these coaches ran a clean program, stressed education, and represented Wake Forest well in a “culture” I was proud to be associated with as a Wake alum. To insinuate that we need to rebuild what these coaches did is an insult.

Bz said, “In order to reach a team’s fullest potential, you have to be disciplined in all areas of your life. That means going to class. That means being on time when time is involved. That means being respectful. That means establishing a work ethic. That means getting out of yourself and into the team, so you have a team concept. Those things need to be re-established here.”

When did these problems start?  Was this a Dino problem or did it start with Skip?  It’s been obvious for a while that this “culture” excuse is coded slander aimed our previous “successful” coaching administration(s).

Bz said, “Those things need to be re-established here.”  That means before Bz arrived our players: 1) were not going to class, 2) were not being on time, 3) were not being respectful, 4) were lazy, and 5) were selfish.  If our Athletic Department wants to behave as “real” Wake “culture” demands, then they need to explain this crap or put a stop to the slander.

And please put this classless act out of our misery.

The new culture is a losing culture. Hey Colorado is KNOWN for basketball.

Bz needs to go back there. In NC we talk about basketball all the time with everybody. He might not worry about the past, but we see our friends, family, people in the grocery store EVERY DAY who know and talk basketball.

WFU is the new joke. Thanks for changing the culture Bz. They used to respect us for our basketball ability. Maybe they still respect Wake in Colorado. Bz is used to finishing last. He gets paid the same anyway so he doesn’t care.
