Bullet Bill Hass on Gelo Orange
Most of the funny lines coach Jim Grobe comes up with are, best I can tell, off the cuff. He reacts to something someone else has said with his wonderful brand of West Virginia wit and wisdom.
But occasionally I get the sense that Grobe has succumbed to the age-old practice of stashing away a good line for just the right time. No shame in that, and, if nothing else, it gives scribes like me good material.
There was a real question last spring if Gelo Orange would return for his redshirt senior season. At first Grobe said he didn’t think Orange would be back. But he said if Orange decides differently, then he would be welcomed back with open arms.
“After all,’’ Grobe said with the straightest of faces, “there’s always room for Gelo.’‘
What brought all that to mind was a really strong piece Bill Hass wrote for Theacc.com on Orange, and all he has experienced since immigrating from Haiti in 2004. Bill and I covered a lot of Wake football and basketball together during his days with the Greensboro News and Record. We covered so much basketball, in fact, that coach Skip Prosser had nicknames for both of us. I was, as you’ve probably heard, Disco. Bill was Bullet, as in Bullet Bill Hass.
