Cobwebs Have Cleared, L.D. Expected to Play
Dizzy Dean caught a baseball up side his head during a double play pivot in the 1934 World Series against the Detroit Tigers. He was carted from the field, only to return later proclaiming ``They X-rayed my head and didn’t find nothing.’‘
Whatever tests that were run on L.D. Williams were similar in that they revealed no permanent effects from the monster pick Cyrus McGowan laid on him during Miami’s victory over the Deacons Wednesday night. After missing two days of practice with headaches, Williams was cleared by the Deacons’ medical staff for tomorrow’s home game against Boston College.
Head coach Dino Gaudio was told to be cautious today, so he held Williams out of the more physical stretches of what turned out to be a really physical practice. But Gaudio said that in the absence of any setbacks, Williams will be ready to play against the Eagles.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate Gaudio’s candor. Many coaches would try to play it coy and not give out any information BC might find useful. And I have to confess there have been times when I haven’t reported an injury that Gaudio and head athletics trainer Greg Collins assured me wasn’t significant. Just last week James Johnson was late to practice and limping with a mild ankle sprain. Both Gaudio and Collins told me they expected Johnson to play two days later at Georgia Tech, and he did.
But when a starter can’t start because he’s hurt, that’s news. If I know it, I need to report it. That could cause serious problems if I were covering other teams, which is another of the many reasons I’m glad I’m covering Wake Forest.
