Deacons Braced For Miami Zone
Coach Dino Gaudio has a ready-made answer for anyone who tells him that Miami might play some zone in Thursday’s first-round game against the Deacons.
Do you reckon?
The Deacons saw an industrial-sized helping of zone in the two regular season games against the Hurricanes, the 67-66 loss in Coral Gables on Jan. 9 and the 62-53 victory in Winston-Salem on Feb. 2. Wake, in the two games, made 39 of 94 shots from the floor (41.5 percent) and nine of 28 from 3-point range (32.1 percent). Coach Frank Haith would have to be tired of coaching ACC basketball in South Florida and just want out if he didn’t play a lot of zone Thursday.
And knowing Frank Haith, I know that’s not who he is.
“We’re going to see 80 percent, 90 percent zone,’’ Gaudio said. “We did some good things against us in both games. We will have worked against it three days. We watched a lot of film yesterday, some of the things we did well and some of the things we need to do better. And we’ll work hard against it for two days now and hopefully we’ll play well against it.’‘

Well- Duh how about 100%
and Ish standing around dribbling still doesn’t work?
and I no longer like our chance

Keep it simple, Deacs. Stay moving, stay aggressive. As a reminder, here’s what happens when we settle for things:
3FG-FGA / %
Aminu 16-58, .276
Ish 11-51, .216
LD 6-34, .176
Chas 0-5, .000
And, yes, per Tony C.‘s astute observation below, get Ari more minutes & shots!

Dan,
I wonder how much of Coach Gaudio’s job this week will be spent reminding the players that they will succeed against Miami’s zone if they stick to the game plan.
To analogize to baseball… a slumping hitter should never think about getting hits. He needs to think about shortening his swing, pitch selection and getting good contact. If he sticks to that game plan, the hits will come. If he pushes too hard, he swings wildly at bad pitches and the slump continues.
Against Miami, the Deacs need to think about moving the ball, making good decisions with the ball, and taking good shots. If they stick to that game plan, the points will come.
Unfortunately, this is easier said than done for a team that has struggled so much offensively this season, especially if we don’t get off to a good start. But if we deviate from the game plan based on moving the ball around the half court (and maybe even moving without the ball!), we will end up with a bunch of last-second bad shots, and the slump will most certainly continue.
Fortunately, we have the type of defense that can create some scoring opportunities for us and keep us in the game for awhile until the shots start to fall. We may need players to “step up” over the course of the postseason, but that doesn’t mean we need any one individual to carry the team on his shoulders.
Best of luck to the guys against Miami.

On Sunday I saw a glimpse of what once was and a feeling of hope for the Deacs. I even saw a couple of different offensive plays I had not seen before, but Dan was right on about Oliver Pernell. He pressed and opened the court up for Ish. He won’t see the same thing from Frank Haith. Perhaps we can see Ari Stewart before the 8 Minute mark of the first half like we did Sunday.

An interesting stat, that I hope holds no importance—the 12 seed has beaten the 5 seed in 3 of the 4 years of the 12-team ACC Tournament.

Like the coach says - you reckon.
Like Paul says - Well Duh!
Perfect time to see a game plan because the staff knows exactly what the team will be facing. This game will be a good indication of progress of the team.
Listened to Ish on the radio this afternoon, more of a continuation of his interview with Stan after the Clemson game. He presented himself very well, he is an asset to the university and the supporters of WFU athletics can be proud of the caliber of men that represent the program. Looking forward to playing watching the Deacons on Saturday and Sunday.

Worst case scenario for Wake, be in the same NCAA bracket as Syracuse! This team really scuffles against the zone.

I hope Dino plans to move that ball around the perimeter, finding the open look, etc. rather than….7 seconds left on shot clock, Ish starts his drive….

Well Duh ! ! only 80-90% ?
and I am doubting a man-to-man press.
and I like our chances.
