Playing Possum on a Saturday Night

Now that the smoke is finally starting to clear from the coaching search and the spring scrimmage has been scrimmaged, I might actually have a quiet Saturday night home with my bride. I don’t know what to do with myself. Best I can up with is to rent Sherlock Holmes on DVD, order a takeout pizza from Coppola’s and maybe pick up a cold party beverage or two to wash it down.

Sounds mighty good to me.

I’m warming up for the festivities by listening to the latest CD by Possum Jenkins. Possum Jenkins For the uninitiated, Possum Jenkins is a band from around these parts that I’ve gotten to know out on the town. The harmonica player, Brent Buckner, has been a good buddy for some time. You may remember the name from the legendary Emma Gibbs Band that was spawned about 10 years ago by Wake students Will Straughan and Richard Upchurch. They broke up after putting out one extraordinary CD, Out To the Country. Will, who moved to Black Mountain, actually plays some dobro on the latest Possum Jenkins effort, Collection of Bad Habits. These guys are all musicians of distinction.

Brent has graced the stage with me and my band a time or two and I’ve gotten to know Dave Willis of Possum Jenkins pretty well from having him play at our Open Mic. Dave is one hell of a singer. He’s the one who gets down in that low register and lives there really, really well. I can visit that neighborhood from time to time, but I can’t live there like Dave can.

They play around this area a lot. Check them out. They’re local, but more important than that, they’re good.

Brian,
Richard is living in NYC, still producing and making music. He has a web page, www.richardupchurch.com. Good musician, even better guy.

Did you say where Upchurch is / is playing in now?  He was on my hall senior year and I loved to listen to him play; even when he was tuning up.  Boy has skills.

Dan,
Do you have any reason to believe the situation with Aminu planning to opt for the NBA draft might change now that Bzdelik—-and reportedly Mark Pope—- would be there to help Aminu become better prepared to play in the NBA? Or is Aminu past the point of no return? Has he signed an agent?
Also, I’m sure you will keep us up to speed with what is going on with the 5 incoming freshmen as you learn about their decisions.
Thanks

What a great band! Thanks for recommending them.  I have downloaded Collection from iTunes. Can’t wait to hear them live.
