As soon as I have another cup of coffee on this glorious late November morning I’ll lay out some more thoughts on yesterday’s game with Vandy.
But in the meantime, it might help more than Arciel if I respond to his question of am I certain that Wake, just because it’s bowl eligible, will receive a bowl bid. Others have asked it as well.
The short answer is yes. The ACC has agreements with eight bowls, and though there are nine bowl eligible teams in the conference, Miami has announced it won’t be attending a bowl this season and North Carolina, under ACC rules, can’t be selected ahead of the Deacons. That’s because Wake, at 5-3, finished two games ahead of the 3-5 Tar Heels in conference play. ACC Football Release
What I’m hearing will surprise no one, that the Deacons are most likely bound for Shreveport to play in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 26. But I’ve been warned not to chisel that in stone because it’s not uncommon in these situations for deals to be cut.
Meanwhile, if you have the stomach for it, you might want to read my take on yesterday’s game that ran this morning in the Journal. Wake Falls Flat in Finale

I couldn’t agree more with Dick H regarding the desired sideline demeanor for a head coach, with one caveat. There are times where a coach needs to pull a player aside and light him up. Several of those times occurred this past Saturday. Whether that takes place right on the sidelines or in the locker room is not really a concern to me, but it has to happen. As long as a head coach is sufficiently engaged to know when to have those interactions with the players, then I am perfectly ok with having a generally calm and reassuring presence on the sidelines.
Regarding the possible bowl locations, I think that Charlottes was a bit of a pipe dream given our record, but I think that Washington, DC would even be a better location than Shreveport - at least it’s in ACC territory. Any chance we would “trade down” with UNC? Then again, with all of the recruiting we have been doing in Texas, I’m sure we can make the most out of a trip down there too.

These fans who want the coach to yell and scream - like an idiot IMHO - want a gym coach rather than a head coach. You guys really want a Dabo Sweeney on the sidelines? Overly emotional head coaches rarely last long in that business. You need an emotionally level headed leader making the sidelines decisions, not cheer leaders. Think Don Shula, Tom Landry, or Bill Belichick not Josh McDaniels or countless other cheerleader failures. Think about it and how an emotionally unstable coach affects the players. Grobe got it right, IMHO. Cool not crazy.

Dan I couldn’t agree more. We were all set to make the trip to Charlotte for the Belk Bowl but there’s no way we’re going to spend Christmas in or traveling to Shreveport. I’ll be curious to see how many Deac Fans actually show up at the game.
The sad part is that the combination of NC State pulling off an incredible comeback against an inept Maryland team and us not showing up against Vanderbilt set the dominos in motion. I never expected Wake to beat Vandy because they had much more to play for than we did. That being said our performance was embarrassing. Let’s hope we’re a little more motivated on December 26th.
By the way in this season of thanksgiving I’m thankful for ESPN and HD Television. Both allow me to watch the Deacs play in a bowl game from the comfort of my home.
GO DEACS!

Stan, Nothing specific. But I can say I’m not the only person associated with Wake who would rather spend Christmas and the day after somewhere other than Shreveport.

Dan, How about asking coach Grobe the next time you two meet why he doesn’t interact with the players more during games. I would love to hear his response and obviously so would many others.

Dan, what kind of deal are you thinking/hearing about?
Stan on 11/27/2011 (11:26 pm)
I agree with Cal- Wake should not accept a bowl bid given that they played with absoulutely NO heart or emotion last night against Vandy. Losing 5 out of their last 6 games to end the season is not bowl worthy! Let another team from another conference have the spot-a team that finished strong and played with heart! As far as tie-ins for the ACC, NC State won 5 out of their last 7 and deserve a better bowl than WF, unfortunately!

You’re welcome Ariel.

Even if Miami had not taken themselves from consideration Wake would go ahead of them because of 5-3 vs. 3-5 in conference play.

Thanks for the explanation Dan.

Dan. Wake should not play in a Bowl at 6-6.What a farce. The Coaches did not prepare the team. Coach Grobe, a great person, does not motivate his players. It is so obvious. Coach Peahead Walker spoke in a strong manner and we responded. The same can be said for Coach Beamer and Coach “K”. The Coaches are paid BIG MONEY to handle these situations. Football players, in most instances, have to be pushed to the limit. I know from experience. Wake has too much talent to play the way they did.

I believe the majority of true fans want to see the head coach engaged with his team, not just wearing a headset listening to the chatter. Did anyone notice Vandy’s coach hand-slapping and encouraging his troops after scores? I saw it.I’ve seen Sabin,Brian Kelly,Gene Chizik,Muschamp, heck even Mack Brown show a little emotion from time to time.I don’t think the head coach needs to be the head cheerleader but a little outward emotion from the head cheese toward his players can’t be all bad.If all college football required was a CEO to hire subordiates and stay out of their way that would be fine, but I think the fans and the team want and deserve more. That said, could Wake do better?, maybe, could they do worse?, well they have a pretty good track record of that already, come on Coach,man-up,get in the game, be a part of the team, yell at the players, the officals, heck even yell at me, I can take it!.Just let us know you’re still breathing underneath the headset.
