Road Trip to the Beach

Smooth ride down to UNC By The Sea. My first time for a basketball game at Trask Coliseum, a small arena (6,100) with a lot of character. I’ve been told not to expect the house to be realy rocking, though, because so many of the students have already gone home for Christmas.
We’ll see in about an hour.

Like everyone else, I’ll be curious to see how Ty Walker handles his homecoming. I imagine his playing time will be dictated, in large part, with how much Wake Forest is able to stay in control. Brian Mull of the Wilmington Star News said that Walker had one of the best games of his high school career in this building against Hoggard High during his junior season for New Hanover.

I’ll also be interested in seeing how Al-Farouq Aminu responds after four straight very un-Aminu-like games. Over those four games, Aminu has averaged only 10.7 points while making just 14 field goals on 50 attempts. I asked Farouq about his mini-slump after Saturday’s victory over Elon.

“I don’t know,’’ Aminu said. “I’m just trying to stay focused and stay in the gym. This break is going to do wonders for everybody.

“Hopefully I’ll get it back going.’’

Regardless of the performance, it’s always good to get a win.  Nevertheless, we’re going to need to play better from now on.  The ACC schedule, as everyone knows, is not as forgiving as UNCW.

Also, I saw on espn that Brad Lambert was a candidate for the Marshall head coaching job.  He probably deserves to be a head coach somewhere, so I am disappointed that he will have to wait awhile longer for such an opportunity.  But I can’t help be happy that he will continue be our defensive coordinator.  It will be exciting to see how how young guys improve next year.  And hopefully Coach Lambert will enjoy building another dominant defense.  Is he interviewing for any other openings or can we pretty much count on him being with us next year?

Ugly win on the road.  I’ll take it.  LD’s performance tonight was fantastic.  If he can play his game (inside the 3-pt. line)night in and night out we are in good shape.  His freethrows looked great tonight as well.  Would liked to have seen Ty play a little more also.  Good win.  Let’s move on and beat State!
