The Battle of the `Staches’

So there is actually something I can do better than either Chas McFarland or Al-Farouq Aminu, and that’s grow a mustache. Of course it might have something to do with the fact I began sprouting mine long before either were born.

Chas told me after the Miami game he’d been growing his for a few weeks. I checked him out after Tuesday’s game against BC and it looked like he’s got a ways to go. Then I noticed the growth above Farouq’s upper lip and couldn’t resist.

“Who’s got the better mustache, you or Chas?’’ I asked.

“Oh I think Chas does,’’ he replied.

“You’ve been working on yours. How long have you had yours going?’’ I asked.

“Just a little bit. Mine doesn’t grow as fast as Chas’,’’ he said.

The only way to have a true contest, obviously, would be for us to all start clean-shaven. I wouldn’t even mind giving both Chas and Farouq a couple of months head start. So here’s the challenge. If Wake reaches the Final Four, I’ll shave my mustache along with my beard. Then I’ll grow only my mustache back until Chas’ graduation in May, at which time we will declare a winner.

Maybe we’ll take photographs and let everybody vote. If I win, all I’m asking for is 1/10th of one-percent of all of Farouq’s future earnings in basketball. Then I really could buy that beach house next to Dave Odom down at Emerald Isle.

Agree with Charles re: the 2004-2005 team.  That loss against West Virginia definitely made me appreciate how a lot of things need to come together besides a very talented roster to win a championship.  Just ask last year’s team about that…

But the bucket of cold water that Charles dumped on the conversation about what to do in the event that Wake Forest reaches the Final Four got me thinking… why are we treating the Final Four as the ultimate goal for this program?  Aren’t we selling ourselves short by doing that?  I just can’t think of any situation where I would be happy finishing a season in third or fourth place.

Is this year’s team the most talented that Wake Forest has ever assembled?  No.  But they play together.  They hustle.  And they are still improving.  I don’t see any reason why this group should not step onto the court expecting to beat their opponent.  So while I would never belittle the accomplishment of appearing in the Final Four, I personally would like to set the bar a little higher.

Charles,

Thanks for peeing in everyone’s Cornflakes.

Maybe the promise of a clean shaven Dan will help the Deacs exorcise the proverbial demons.

I would love to see WF make a final 4.  But let’s face the facts, they couldn’t make it with Tim Duncan, Josh Howard, or Chris Paul.  How is this group supposed to?  But someday…..  Their best chance in my opinion was the year Chris Paul and co. lost to West Va. in the NCAAs, what a heartbreaker that was, sticks with me still.  That was a great team that ended badly, as so many Wake teams do.  CPs groin punch was the beginning of the end for them.  Sorry if this is stirring up bad memories for you readers!

Sans beard, he might even look respectable.  This could be a watershed moment in Dan’s life :)

If Wake reaches the Final Four, I will run naked down King Street here in Boone. I’ve been waiting for a Final Four my whole life.

If Dan joined the witness protection program, they’d just hand him a razor and let him live at his current residence.

If the drought ends at 48 years, the pictures of that clean face will be worth more than a thousand words.

If a clean-shaven Dan Collins isn’t enough inspiration for the Deacs to make the Final 4, I really don’t think the inspiration is out there! C’mon Deacs! Dan’s facial skin hasn’t seen the light of day in forever!

BTW, Dan, sounds like you’ve given up on your alma mater in 09-10?

I can’t even begin to imagine what a clean-shaven Dan Collins would look like. Here’s to the Deacs giving us all the chance to find out.
