Wake Asleep Again in First Half

Maryland, I concede, may be better than I expected. But the Terps aren’t as good as Wake made them look in the first half.

Rendering another second half all but meaningless, the Deacons appear to be the antidote to the rash of upsets that popped out like a rash all over the ACC. BC knocks off Clemson, Virginia upends Miami, North Carolina trails William & Maryland 17-7 at half and Duke leads Navy 24-0 at halftime up the road in Annapolis. But here in College Park it’s the same old same old as the Deacons gave up touchdowns on Maryland on three of the Terps’ first four possessions. Maryland has 16 first downs to Wake’s six, and has gained 239 yards to 99 by the Deacons.

Since starting 2-0 with wins over Presbyterian and Duke, the Deacons have been outscored 151-54 in the first half. And they’ve done it in novel ways, today by having two punts blocked deep in their own territory.

From here it looked like the three-man wall there to protect punter Shane Popham is too far back from the line of scrimmage, and each time the rush has been able to bound over the blockers to get to the football. Something I’ll be asking Coach Grobe when the game is over.

Earlier in the year…as in a few weeks ago, I pondered if the fans would still be around towards the end of the year, and if the students would start coming back after halftime if we keep losing.  Having said that, and seen what we have done since Stanford, I just have one statement to make:  For Sale - 2 season tickets, 45 yard line.  Free to anyone who wants to go and watch a team with no guts and a coaching staff with no enthusiasm for the game.

Dano on 10/31/2010 (11:11 pm)

Dan, a good article as usual. I cannot see enough potential for next year to be competitive in the ACC. We have a few players who will “step up” next year, but not enough. All indications point to recruiting. Unless more work is in the recruiting area, we will be in for some difficult seasons. The “fight in the team is lacking. Our defense has moved in the wrong direction. Whether it be the defensive line or defensive backs, it is obvious. Ron Wellman needs to do some
“homework”. The problem may be minor, as far as decisions are concern. We will see.

You would think the team would improve some each week but not Wake.  We are are going in the opposite direction. Reminds me of basketball.  When Grobe continues to talk about youth.  Is this a cover up for two or three years of bad recruiting? I really do not think Coach Grobe can turn this thing around next year.  He shold go the way of Dino. He is one of the top 3 or 4 paid coaches in the ACC. We are not getting our moneys worth.

It’s almost like they’re doing it on purpose (losing).  I turn on the tv and all I see if Grobe staring off into space, presumably staring at the awful scoreboard. He needs to “wake up” and grow a pulse. I don’t see any coaching going on the sidelines, and I see zero communication amongst coaches/players.  Whoever said they’ve given up is 100% correct.

Coach Grobe has been good for our program—fact..But it is apparent to me that he is not the same coach he was a decade ago. We all become less engaged in our careers at some point. Add to this, his assistants aren’t very resourceful and adept to change. with the bye week, they were unprepared both mentally and physically to play. I can’t name one player that appeared ready to play..Our kick returners appear ready to be tackled before they even get close to an opponent—I am not referring to the big tight end..Our guys seem reluctant to play at full speed. after rushing for 220+ yards against Tech, we start out with 3 passes?? We wanted a balanced attack?? It has become an embarrassment unfortunately. I think a coaching change has to happen to keep our young players at Wake, and to help with recruiting. Would you want to go to Wake after watching them this sseason? Thank grobe for all he has done, but there comes a time when change is needed—and that time has come. I can’t think of any coaches that I would retain, which in and of it self is sad…We need new direction, leadership, intensity, and desire. all of which are lacking now.

Embarrassing seems too mild a word.  Embarrassing was what happened against Stanford, and Florida State, and Va Tech.  Getting beaten like this by Maryland—by Maryland, for Pete’s sake, is absolutely beyond the pale. I can no longer blame this on bad luck or on the fact that we have been playing “really good teams.”  Dan, please ask Ron Wellman if he has started conducting a root cause analysis of this debacle season yet.  Is there anything we few die hard fans can do to help avoid further abject hummiliations?

Let me be the first to officially declare the 2010 WFU football season over. Thank goodness the Deac’s caught the Blue Hose and the Devils early or they too could have hung 50 or so points on them. It’s one thing to lose but quite another to be embarassed the way this team has.How did the Terps get their freshman QB 8 miles away in K’ville and the other in state schools didn’t?. How long can this coaching staff keep finding positives in the beat downs this team has been exposed to?

Glennard on 10/30/2010 (8:19 pm)

The Deacs are pretending that they’re football players, so let’s pretend the season is over.  One good pretending deserves another.  On a serious note, how does the basketball team look?  Are the freshman as good as advertized?

MikeB on 10/30/2010 (8:17 pm)

The Wake- Md game reminds of the highschool game recently when Alleghany County agreed to call the game at the end of the third quarter when they trailed 62 to something.

I also remember a time when Wake was as bad or worse than they are now.  When someone put up a sign on I40 that Said Interstate 40, Wake 0

patrick price on 10/30/2010 (8:11 pm)

..well it may have been a stretch to say this after the Blacksburg experience, but its not a stretch to say it today after College Park. This team has given up. Given up on Grobe, the assistants…each other… whomever. You can see it especially after Givens drops a ball running over the middle….and there is not even any the slightest emotion shown, not even on his part. I never thought I would see a Grobe-coached team giving up..but I guess there is a first for everything. Thank God Duke was on early in the schedule. I do hope Coach has enough pride in himself at this stage in his career to make the tough calls he needs to make to shake up the staff… or maybe motivate even himself.

A horrendous game from end to end. It is as if the coaching staff did nothing on the bye week to instill some skills into the team especially the defense and for a change, the offensive line was terrible too.

The season is now a write-off in terms of getting to a bowl game. Both co-coordinators have to go; their play calling and position settings have been detrimental to the team. What needs to be done now is to work with the freshmen and sophomore players and see if they can gel into a more cohesive team for next year.
Recruiting needs to be step up. Bigger and stronger for the lines is a must. There is too much potential talent like Price and Harris to go to waste.

If anything else, the team needs to end on a positive note with some confidence for next year. A signature win like against NC State or Clemson will do it but I do not know if the team can do it. It seems that the coaching staff never learns from how other teams manage to win games against Wake’s opponents. If Duke can beat Navy as they did today, why couldn’t Wake?

NCBrian on 10/30/2010 (6:48 pm)

Embarrassing-again.
