Will Price Be Right?
Jim Grobe left open the possibility that the player who starts at quarterback in Wake Forest’s 2010 opener against Presbyterian set for Sept. 2 wasn’t even on the field today in the spring scrimmage at BB&T Field.
It might be too much to ask a first-year freshman to take his first snaps in August and win the quarterback derby in a month. But Grobe said he wouldn’t make any decisions until he sees what Tanner Price, a 6-2 recruit from Austin, can do. Grobe did say that Skylar Jones emerged from the spring as the starter, but that Ted Stachitas and Brendan Cross are still very much in the picture.
Jones completed four of five passes for 38 yards and carried seven times for 21 yards today. Stachitas completed four of seven for eight yards and carried seven times for 18 yards. Cross completed nine of 12 for 73 yards and carried nine times for 12 yards.
“I don’t want to creating any kind of ideas that we’re begging to have a freshman start at quarterback,’’ Grobe said. “But we’ve not ruled it out. I think our quarterbacks understand that we don’t care who plays quarterback for us. We want the best guy to be there, and you have to earn it every day. That’s the way we treat them.
“If Tanner gets here and he’s good enough to step in and take the job, fine. But we’re not giving him anything, and we’re not giving Sky or Ted or Brendan or any of the other guys anything.’‘
