Woods and McFarland Both to Start at FSU
About the time I’d finished stuffing my face with citrus baked chicken and au gratin spuds from the pregame buffet, Scott Wortman, Wake’s assistant director of media relations in charge of basketball, asked me if I’d heard about the lineup change for tonight’s game with Florida State.
I hadn’t.
Scott said that Coach Dino Gaudio will go tonight with two big men, Tony Woods and Chas McFarland, in the lineup, moving Al-Farouq Aminu to wing forward. Seniors Ish Smith and L.D. Williams will start in the backcourt and freshman C.J. Harris, who has started 20 straight games, will come off the bench.
Upon hearing the news, I harkened back to something Dino said in the post-game media conference after Saturday’s home loss to North Carolina.
“If there was one thing I wish we could establish more it would be an inside game,’’ Gaudio said. “That’s what I wish we could establish more. But because we’re not making jump shots, the lane is incredibly crowded. As soon as they guys catch, there’s another guy behind and another guy digging down. If you said `Put your finger on one thing, do you want to make threes or do want to have an inside game?’ I wish we had the inside game.’‘
The Deacons have come full circle, going with the same lineup they opened the season with.

Few rebounds (consistently boxed out). No screening. No set plays. Sluggish and bad passing. Coach in a daze or a doze. Terrible substituting.

I’m curious as to when someone thinks the Deacs are going to turn it around. They are only guaranteed 2 more games this season.

I opined in yesterday’s post that I thought this was more an issue of heart and desire than just strategy. After last night I am now convinced that the Deacs don’t have any…...heart, desire or strategy! I will make one exception…...Ish obviously has limitations but he gives it everything he’s got every night. I also suggested that we need to stop panicing…...after last niight I have totally bypassed panic and moved on to resignation.

Given the understandably hostile reactions to the game below, I wonder if I am just being overly optimistic, but I still expect this team to turn things around.
Among other things, CJ Harris and Ari Stewart must play at a high level for the team to succeed down the stretch. I thought CJ played well last night off the bench, which I hope will provide a springboard towards better play over the next few weeks. Stewart continues to improve as well.
As some mentioned below, our defense is still pretty good. So if we can just heat up our perimeter players, we are still a dangerous team. Obviously this is no small task given the abysmal shooting of the last two weeks, but this team has the talent.
I won’t comment anymore on coaching until the end of the year.

Can we possibly get a coach from the Forsyth County Parks & Rec league to draw up a play for Dino to get the ball in bounds from under the basket?
beachdeac on 03/04/2010 (9:37 am)
Tough loss last night. Have to disagree with previous posters, the Deacs gave effort and hustle throughout the game as evidenced by their defense which was excellent. Obviously not a very gifted offensive team and when playing against the country’s #1 defense it shows. Good to see CJ regain some of his confidence back last night. Need to lace’em up and beat Clemson this weekend. Go Deacs

As others have already said, it was a very disappointing performance from a team that clearly has no direction, no confidence, and no leadership. the substitution pattern is almost a joke, at times we had no outside threats in the game against their zone. we can’t even design an in bounds play to get the ball in..the entire coaching staff (minus Rusty) should be replaced. It is clear that the coaches have lost the respect of the players—no desire, no intensity—Ish did have it early Wednesday night, but no one else. I do agree that Iminu has to step up more, and play much smarter if Waqke is going to win again this year. We also have to stop committing such foolish fouls—our big men fouling their guards 30 feet from the basket?? We are definitely in a “funk,” and it looks like it’s not just a 24 hour variety..

That was awful. 20 turnovers, nobody to shoot, no half-court sets…just awful. Defense was great, but how come there is nobody who can run a play that works? What about running Harris or Stewart around some screens to get open shots? We do none of that. Ish is the only one who can create a shot, but him dribbling around is our only offense. There were multiple possessions where we could not even get off a shot (or anything better than a heave that fails to hit the rim). Just pathetic. No answer at all for a zone, no ability to get anyone an open shot unless they create off of the dribble, just nothing.
Why can’t Dino seem to call any plays on offense? Why has there been no improvement in the offensive sets since last season?
Scott on 03/04/2010 (1:30 am)
More big bodys in the lane and no one to shoot from outside. No one in that lineup is a threat from 3. ....and it showed. I think the lane was just that much more clogged. I guess that contributed to Aminu’s scoreless night. Can they turn it around Dan?

This Prosser/Gaudio fast break offensive style is a late season and tournament loser and has been since Skip came. Winning tournament teams play solid half court offense. Wake has not fit into this category since Odom was running the show. Wake has not beaten a team higher seeded than 10th in the NCAA Tournament in the Prosser/Gaudio era.

forgot to mention:
4 starters combine for 9 points? great coaching. the past two games, we let a sub 42% FG shooter take the majority of our shots. can we have one inbounds play drawn up where we can actually get the ball in bounds to OUR players? when we call timeouts, let’s actually have a play drawn up so we can run it. what kind of offensive sets were we running? see who can pass the ball around the perimeter the most and then eventually hand it to the other team? Dino has got to go.
Sam on 03/04/2010 (12:07 am)
Who in their right mind thinks aminu can play in the nba? he can’t dribble, he can’t shoot, he can’t score 1 point vs FSU, he can’t find a way to get more than 2 shots up? Do I need anymore examples?
Sam on 03/03/2010 (11:57 pm)
We don’t have an inside or an outside game right now-another late season meltdown.
Steve on 03/03/2010 (11:17 pm)
Ouch! Wake has come full circle. I watched this team in its first few games at home and wondered how they were going to win more than 19 games (looking at their schedule) and who was going to score points consistently game in, game out. Then they looked good for a stretch, played hard, hustled and won games. Now we’re back to scoring in the low 50-s and playing with little emotion…dissapointing.
Ron on 03/03/2010 (11:09 pm)
Worked out pretty well overall. Farouq, playing out of the position where he is most effective, scored… hang on a sec… got it here somewhere… there it is - ZERO points.
And Tony and Chas were some serious cash money in the half court sets to.
Lookin’ good. Let’s keep the roll going into the postseason.

Absolutely no excuse. No effort at all. I guess we should get used to this in February and March. 3 straight games with noo effort, no pride. The problem is systemic. If you can’t figure it out it is time to try something else. Dino and co. have to go. Start over. This clearly will not work. Let Grobe coach. At least we get an honest effort.
jrandalhunter on 03/03/2010 (10:26 pm)
Country,
Well obviously the line up change failed to work. Many others will take issue and rightly so with the poor play by the Deacs.
My only comment is that if Dino did not have a top five recruiting class arriving next year he should be dismissed. This is the only reason he should be given one more year to show if he can be a winner in Feb and March…
