Clinton Speaks in Winston
Hillary Clinton, campaigning tonight at Forsyth Technical Community College, dismissed calls for her to drop out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“Some people have been saying we should just end these primaries,” Clinton said, as the crowd of about 1,000 people shouted “No! No!”.
“Well, I think a lot of people still want their voices heard and their votes counted. This is a very close election, and I think that’s exciting because so many people have been brought into this process,” she said. Clinton added that she is looking forward to “criss-crossing North Carolina” in the five and a half weeks remaining before the state’s May 6 primary.
Clinton gave a 45-minute stump speech in which she repeated the key proposals of her presidential platform, including withdrawing troops from Iraq, providing universal health care and creating new jobs in manufacturing and the clean-energy industry.
“I want to have an emphasis on manufacturing again. I believe you can’t have a strong economy if you don’t make anything anymore,” Clinton said.
After her speech in Raleigh this morning, Clinton stumped in Fayetteville before coming to Winston-Salem. She was more than an hour late arriving to Winston, and she apologized profusely to the crowd because the NCAA tournament game between UNC and Washington State was about to start. Fans who chose Clinton over Carolina didn’t miss much of a game.
