Filing Recap, Part 2
Ten out of the 19 state legislative districts in Northwest North Carolina will be competitive this year. Some of them, such as the 45th Senate District and the 93rd House District, are considered key swing districts, and the winners of these races will help decide the balance of power in the N.C. General Assembly for its next two-year session.
Here is a run-down of the 10 competitive races in our area:
34th Senate District (Davie and Rowan counties): Incumbent Sen. Andrew Brock, a Republican, will face Democrat William Burnett in the general election.
45th Senate District (Alexander, Ashe, Wilkes and Watauga counties): Republicans Dwight Shook and Jerry Butler will run in a primary to face incumbent Sen. Steve Goss, a Democrat.
74th House District (northwest Forsyth County): Incumbent Rep. Dale Folwell, a Republican, will face Democrat Bill Browning in the general election.
75th House District (southwest Forsyth County): Incumbent Rep. Bill McGee, a Republican, will face Democrat Dan Bennett in the general election.
81st House District (western and central Davidson County): Incumbent Rep. Hugh Holliman, a Democrat, will face Republican Rayne Brown in the general election.
90th House District (Alleghany County and most of Surry County): Incumbent Rep. Jim Harrell III, a Democrat, will face Republican Sarah Stevens in the general election.
91st House District (Stokes County and western Rockingham County): Incumbent Rep. Bryan Holloway, a Republican, will face Democrat Ed Gambill in the general election.
92nd House District (Yadkin County, northern Iredell County and eastern Surry County): Republicans Darrell McCormick and Dempsey Brewer will run in a primary, with the winner facing Democrat Ric Marshall in the general election. Incumbent Rep. George Holmes, a Republican, is not running for re-election.
93rd House District (Ashe and Watauga counties): Incumbent Rep. Cullie Tarleton, a Democrat, will face Republican Dan Soucek in the general election.
94th House District (Wilkes County): Republicans John Reavill, Roger Smithey and Shirley Randleman will run in a primary, with the winner facing Democrat Larry Pendry in the general election. Incumbent R. Tracy Walker, a Republican, is not running for re-election.
