Not All N.C. Congressional Dems on Board

Several congressional Democrats from North Carolina — but not all of them — will endorse Barack Obama this week, possibly as early as tomorrow, Congressman G.K. Butterfield told Trail Mix this morning.

Butterfield, who represents the state’s 1st Congressional District, which covers northeast North Carolina, is the only congressman from North Carolina who has endorsed Obama so far. The state’s other six congressional Democrats have remained neutral between Obama and Hillary Clinton.

A Wall Street Journal story reported today that all of North Carolina’s congressional Democrats will endorse Obama before May 6. But Butterfield said that story is premature. “That is not true,“ he said. “Our goal is to enlist all seven, but I’m not saying to you that it will happen.“

“Two or three” members of the state’s Democratic delegation will endorse Obama as early as tomorrow, Butterfield said. He would not identify who they are. The other members of the delegation may end up endorsing Obama, but may remain neutral through May 6, Butterfield said. He said that he does not believe any of them will endorse Clinton.

Update 11:40 a.m.: Here’s a list of North Carolina’s seven congressional Democrats:

Rep. G.K. Butterfield
Rep. Bob Etheridge
Rep. Brad Miller
Rep. Mike McIntyre
Rep. David Price
Rep. Heath Shuler
Rep. Mel Watt

Under the Dome reports that Etheridge has not yet made a decision about whether to endorse Obama or Clinton.

Also, Media General’s Herd on the Trail blog quotes spokesmen for several members of the delegation saying the Wall Street Journal story is premature.
