JournalNow.com: Veggin' Out

Contrary to a popular stereotype, vegetarians are not all champions of self-denial, pathetically munching a sprout on the sidelines while watching the omnivores have all the culinary fun. Instead, the vegetarians we know love good food and know where to get it. They aren't about to settle for a bland meal, either at home or at a restaurant.

A Lovecraft reader replies…

So does “Veganomicon” translate as “The Book Of Vegetables” or “An Image of the Law of the Vegetables” ...?

And while avoiding Brussel sprouts is indeed a good idea, I don’t think it’s wise to follow HPL’s dietary regimen too closely. In S.T. Joshi’s biography of him, he relates a letter Lovecraft wrote detailing his usual diet of canned beans, bread and cheese, in which he is proud of his thriftiness (as he is on the page of quotes you have linked to). In a letter to the same person written months later, he mentions that he has acquired a hot plate, and now has the luxury of heating his food. Meaning: he had been eating canned beans COLD for months.

“[Involving] no particle of malnourishment or unpalatability” indeed.
