JournalNow.com: Veggin' Out

Contrary to a popular stereotype, vegetarians are not all champions of self-denial, pathetically munching a sprout on the sidelines while watching the omnivores have all the culinary fun. Instead, the vegetarians we know love good food and know where to get it. They aren't about to settle for a bland meal, either at home or at a restaurant.

No more Boca “sausage”

Update: Boca sausage has returned!

I’m throughly disconsolate to learn that Boca has decided to discontinue its meatless breakfast sausages. They are still listed on the Boca Web site, but since I’ve been unable to find them in area stores, I sent Boca an e-mail and received the disappointing news in reply. The reply blamed lack of consumer demand for the decision to stop making them.

The Boca sausages have been a staple breakfast food for me for years. It was so handy to pop a couple into the microwave, and they tasted great. Even an unrepentantly carnivorous friend of mine liked them better than real sausage.

There’s really no alternative “sausage” for me to switch to—I don’t like the taste of the Morningstar Farm sausages at all.

If you are as cranky about this as I am, you can send Boca a complaint at its Web site, or call 1-877-966-8769.

BOCA Italian Sausage,I can’t find them and the stores where is it. What store are they in, I’m in Illinois and can’t find them no where. Could you send me the information about your product. I don’t like morning star product.

NOOOOOO!!!  I discovered these sausages just last week at a store in another county.  March 2010….I have been on the hunt for them in San Diego County because I did a taste test between them and the morning star patties and these won HANDS DOWN….this is not the first time this happened.  About a year ago I discovered BOCA brats…....they were amazing (I’ve been a veggie for almost two years and I missed brats)...same thing….sorry - not popular so discontuned…..They need to learn how to market…the brats and the breakfast links are true in spice flavor to the “real” thing….I think I need to stock up next week.

I am as cranky about this as you are, and would add that their explanation is also dissatisfying - other companies are continuing to sell veggie sausages, presumably at a profit, and theirs don’t even taste good, so why is the problem at Boca?

We were also upset with the discontinuance of the Boca Italian Sausage.  However, Smart Sausages browned slowly on a lightly oiled pan are pretty good.

Thanks!  I wondered what was happening.  I don’t like any of the alternatives either and they were a staple for me too.

Thanks again!  Deanna

It was literally my favorite non-meat food by far.  So bummed I can’t enjoy it in my soups or pastas anymore.  The other options are awful and I’ve tried them all.

I am very saddened -no actually I feel betrayed- by the discontinuation of the Boca Sausages. Morningside’s sausage easily crumbles into a pasty texture when you chew them and that does not make for good cuisine. I will register my disappointment to Boca as loudly as I can. I thoroughly missed my cornbread stuffing and Italian sausage this Thanksgiving.
Boca sausages were the one thing I was able to sell my boys on that was vegetarian.

The best advice I can give is to call the Boca customer-service line at 1-877-966-8769 to express how upset you are that they’ve discontinued their sausages. Have your friends call, too!

I loved the boca italian sausage and can’t believe they have discontinued it as well.
What can we do??

Monica deLamadrid on 06/17/2009 (10:48 pm)

I have just discovered your website.  I too am sadden that Boca discontinued its Italian Sausage and cited,‘lack of consumer demand’ as to why.  Has anyone found a reasonable substitute?  My pastas aren’t the same without it.

Thanks,
Gloria

What we really miss in our household are the Boca Italian sausages, which are fabulous with chopped spinach and in many other presentations. We have yet to discover any replacement whatsoever, but we are up for trying to reinvent them at home, which will probably save us some money, anyway.

I am so upset to find out that Boca will no longer be making the Boca Italian or the Boca Bratwurst sausages anymore. Please bring them back,

I also cannot find Boca Italian sausages or the other kinds. I really liked them!

This is disappointing news.  I thought maybe just my grocery store dropped Boca sausage (links and patties).  I much preferred Boca’s patties over Morningstar’s and their links were good too.

Kevin on 01/05/2009 (4:26 pm)

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll have to give them a try. I’ve also seen that LightLife has patties in the frozen-food section, but I haven’t tried them yet.

Tofurky has a link sausage that’s pretty good and it’s vegan. I bought it at Whole Foods
